The Ventnor Baysox defeated the Somers Point Captains 14-7 on Monday to open up the SJSSBL season . The game was tied at seven with The Ventnor Baysox batting in the bottom of the fifth when Drew Powell singled on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs to give them a lead they would not give up.
Javi Vega led The BaySox to victory by driving in five runs. Vega went 1-for-1 at the plate driving in runs on a grand slam in the first and a walk in the sixth.
After The Somers Point Captains scored one run in the top of the third, Ventnor answered with one of their own. The Captains scored early when Cole Campbell’s sac fly plated a run for Somers Point. The Baysox then answered right back when Shane Nanek grounded out, scoring one run.
Powell was the winning pitcher for Ventnor. He allowed two hits and no runs over two and a third innings, striking out three and walking one.
Kevin Foreman took the loss for The Somers Point Captains. The hurler allowed three hits and seven runs over three innings, striking out two.
Joe Farrell led Ventnor with two hits in four at bats. Ventnor was sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Ventnor stole five bases during the game. Billy Wheatley led the way with two.
The Somers Point Captains tallied 12 hits on the day. Shane Solam, Sean O’Rourke, and Brody Levin each had multiple hits for Somers Point. Solam and Campbell both homered. The Captains tore up the base paths with 8 stolen bases. Mike Desenzo led the way with two. The Captains return to action tonight In EHT. The Baysox host The Cardinals on Wednesday night.
